You may be aware that Clayton County provides shuttle service transportation for Clayton and Delaware county veterans with appointments at the VA Clinic in Dubuque and the medical center in Iowa City. This service is provided at no charge to veterans and relies exclusively on the support of county volunteers to ensure that Veterans have a reliable means of travel for their appointments. Please note, that one does not have to be a veteran and/or service member to volunteer. Currently, we wish to identify additional volunteers who could serve in one of the following roles:
Shuttle Coordinator is responsible for coordinating travel for Clayton and Delaware county veterans to the VA clinic in Dubuque (twice a month – 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month) and the Iowa City medical center (two days each week – Tuesday and Thursday). The coordinator not only confirms travel dates of the veteran but also works with volunteer drivers to ensure coverage for designated travel days. The coordinator will also work driver to ensure that the shuttle is fuel and regular maintenance is attended to. All candidates should exercise strong customer service skills- which include being an empathetic, active listener who is able to problem solve and communicate in manner that is engaging, clear and respectful.
Shuttle Drivers are responsible for transporting to county veterans to designated pick-up locations to the VA Clinic and/or medical center. The travel schedule for the VA medical center in Iowa City is Tuesday and Thursday each week. Travel to the VA Medical Clinic in Dubuque is on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. The county does pay a stipend to volunteer drivers and divers would have to complete DOT training (as required by the VA) . Drivers must possess strong customer service skills and be familiar with travel routes throughout the county as well as to designated VA facilities. Please note that with this role, we can easily assign a specific day within a month the for a volunteer so that schedule remains consistent and does not negatively impact/interfere with a company’s business needs.
