Lock Master's House Heritage Museum
Two Lockmasters houses were built near the Lock and Dam #10 site in 1938, one each for the lockmaster and assistant lockmaster. One of these houses was purchased and moved to a site just north of Guttenberg. The other house sat empty after the lockmaster moved out of it in the fall of 1990. The house now operates as a museum to preserve the history of Guttenberg and the lock and dam system. Museum is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, but is closed on Mondays. Museum is also open weekends in September and daily in October for leaf season. Appointments available for special showings. No admission, but donations are appreciated.
Gutenberg Bible Replica
A facsimile copy of the Gutenberg Bible is on display at the Guttenberg Library, 603 South Second St. It is one of a two-volume set, which was purchased in the 1940s from the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany. This same copy of the Bible was on display in the Gutenberg print shop in Mainz during an air attack during World War II. As a result, fire and water damaged the cover and some pages.
Guttenberg Aquarium and Fish Management Station
Get up close and personal with fish from the Mississippi River. Operated by biologists with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the exhibits include a large selection of live Mississippi River fish and trout found in local streams. Buttons made in Guttenberg from shells are also on display. In the early spring months, Northern Pike are spawned at the hatchery. The aquarium is open from 8 am to 4 pm, May 1 through October 1.
Ingleside Park
Guttenberg's prize attraction is the public parkway, which extends for 3 miles all along the town river front. The park attracts picnickers, joggers, fishermen and bird-watchers. Grills are scattered along the way for cook-outs with a view. Park benches also line the length of the park and are great for watching barges float by.
